What is DIM?

DIM (Diindolylmethane) is a nutrient commonly found in cruciferous vegetables; normally when broccoli, cabbage, or any other cruciferous vegetable is chewed it activates these hidden enzymes. These enzymes then mix with your stomach acid and create DIM. The nutrient DIM is one of the reasons why it is suggested that you eat the recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. However, a large percentage of people do not eat their recommended five a day, and even if they do normally the vegetables that contain DIM are left out. Therefore it may be beneficial to take a DIM supplement to ensure complete health and to support disease prevention.

The supplement DIM is a power house of goodness and protection. When you take a DIM supplement you are basically swallowing all the goodness of food without having to chew it. Of course you could always eat more cruciferous vegetables, but often people find it difficult to eat the dark green veggies that make up the cruciferous family. These vegetables include:

  • Cabbage
  • Bok Choy
  • Broccoli
  • Kale
  • Collard Greens
  • Mustard seeds
  • Napa
  • Cauliflower
  • And many more

There are several more vegetables available that contain the nutrient DIM; I simply don’t have room to list them all. The point is that many of these vegetables must be steamed or cooked before consumption, and many people simply just don’t like them. So they tend to get left on the grocer’s shelf rather than in your stomach.

So why is it so important that you eat these cruciferous vegetables, or take a DIM supplement daily?

Taking a DIM supplement everyday has several positive benefits, some of these benefits have been proven, and some are still speculation. None the less, the proven benefits make taking DIM completely and utterly essential. Scientists have shown through many studies that DIM actually posses the ability to not only help prevent certain cancers but also may destroy the cancer cell itself. The way that DIM may help to prevent cancer is by regulating the balance of good vs. bad estrogen in the body.

Other benefits of taking DIM include anti-inflammatory response, hormonal balance, and although this fact has not yet been tested in the lab it is thought to contain powerful weight loss properties. It is thought that weight loss comes from the fact that it balances the hormones within the body, reduces inflammation, and that enables the body to lose excess weight, or not gain weight so easily. Also, another fact that is not yet proven is the thought that DIM is an anti-aging supplement. This claim comes from the fact that DIM balances/restores the hormones within the body to that of a young man or woman, thereby giving the individual a younger feel and a less aged appearance.

No matter what claims have been made about DIM the scientifically proven facts about the nutrient are enough to sway anyone’s opinion. DIM is a powerful supplement with possible cancer prevention capabilities and whatever other benefits you receive from it should just be considered as a wonderful side effect of this already wonderful nutrient.
