Ceramides — Breakthrough in Face, Hair, and Body Treatments

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

What are ceramides?

Ceramides are a natural part of the cell membrane in the outermost layer of the epidermis. They help the skin to maintain its moisture-binding and protective barrier functions. Ceramides make up 40% of the lipid, or oily, component of the intercellular cement which binds epidermal skin cells together.

Intercellular cement in the skin performs the same function as mortar between the bricks in a wall. As the wall ages, the substance which prevents this from happening is the intercellular cement of the skin.

Where do ceramides come from?

Ceramides can be chemically synthesized, derived from animals or plants, or yeast-derived. Chemically synthesized ceramides do not meet the criteria for “natural”. Ceramides can be derived from animals — usually obtained from the brain and spinal cord — but these are not cruelty free sources. In addition, ceramides from animal sources can carry viruses. Ceramides derived from plants are less concentrated. The ceramides used in Borlind Ceramide Vital Fluid are biotechnically obtained from yeast.

Why are they important?

The amount of ceramide in the epidermis determines the level of hydration of the skin. The lower the amount of ceramide, the drier the skin. Thus ceramides play a key role in maintaining the moisture level, smoothness, elasticity, and firmness of the skin.  As we age, the ceramide concentration in the skin’s intercellular cement declines. The result – damaging environmental pollutants and other harmful elements can enter the body. In addition, the skin’s moisture-binding capability diminishes resulting in dehydration of the tissues.

Why are ceramides beneficial?

Topical application of ceramides increases the concentration of ceramides in the epidermis. The result:

  • Reduced moisture loss
  • Enhanced moisture binding capability
  • Increased elasticity and firmness
  • Reinforcement of the skin’s protective functions
  • Strengthened resistance to free radical damage
  • Noticeable smoothing of wrinkles and fine lines
  • Smoother, more refined skin texture

Ceramides are also excellent restorative care for skin that has been abraded or over-exposed to the elements. Damage caused by rubbing, scrubbing, wind, burning, sunburn, or chemical peeling heals more rapidly when ceramides are
topically applied. Moisture levels in the skin also increase with regular ceramide application. Hydration gives a smoother appearance, reducing scaliness and dullness.

Ceramide Vital Fluid — Enhances Benefits of Daily Skin Care Program

Ceramide Vital Fluid stimulates oxygen utilization in the cells and supports natural skin regeneration. At the same time the moisture-retaining ability of the skin is increased and its resistance strengthened. Ceramide Vital Fluid is suitable for even the most sensitive skin.

Used as a daily supplement to the regular care program, Ceramide Vital Fluid should be applied after cleansing and toning and before day or night creams. Dermatological tests have shown that after 14 days of regular use, Ceramide Vital Fluid

  • Increases firmness of the skin by 42%
  • Boosts moisture content of the skin by 28%
  • Increases skin’s protection against free radicals by 88%
  • Enhances cell regeneration

Holy Basil-The “Elixir of Life”

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

Holy basil is one of the most commonly used herbs in Ayurvedic medicine. This flowering plant is sacred to Hindus, and is used not only as a medicinal herb but in worship as well. Often referred to by Hindus as the “Elixir of Life” and the “Queen of Herbs,” this beneficial and powerful plant has been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years.

Health Benefits of Holy Basil

Holy basil is an adaptogen. This means that the herb has the power to increase vitality and generally rejuvenate the body. Adaptogens are also often referred to as tonics, which are used primarily in medicine to maintain a general wellness and balance. Adaptogens work more by keeping the body healthy, than curing an illness that is already present.

Holy basil has positive effects on both the mind and the body. It is used to enhance natural homeostatic balance to the receptors in the brain to prevent stress to the physiological systems and helps the mind have the capacity to cope with challenging situations that can normally induce significant levels of stress. It is used in Ayurvedic medicine to help provide nutrients to the brain that are necessary for assistance with meditation and spiritual enlightenment.

Holy basil is a strong antioxidant that provides protection from free radicals that can damage the body. It neutralizes biochemicals that can lead to degenerative diseases and cancer. It increases the absorption of healthy nutrients from foods by enhancing the digestive system and promotes healthy liver function.

Holy basil is a powerful anti-inflammatory that reduces inflammation, and it is beneficial to your cardiovascular system as it helps to lower blood pressure and cholesterol. It helps to moderate blood sugar levels which makes it a powerful treatment for those with diabetes. It provides staminate, reduces and prevents fevers, enhances the bodies ability to process proteins, has anti-aging effects and much, much more. In fact, there are very few things that Holy basil is not beneficial for in our bodies.

Taking a Holy Basil Supplement

Holy basil can be found in a variety of dosages. Some recommend taking one dosage per day while others feel a single dosage a day will suffice. The most important thing to consider when taking a Holy basil supplement is the quality of the product to ensure that you reap the most benefits from the herb. Products such as Holy Basil Extract by Source Naturals provide an adequate dosage of the herb in just one serving per day.

Holy basil is a relatively safe herbal supplement with very few side effects being reported by those taking the medication. However, as with most herbal supplements it should only be used for brief periods of time with small breaks in between uses and should not be used by women who are pregnant or breast-feeding. It should also not be used prior to any surgical procedures you may be having, as it may pose a risk of excessive bleeding during surgery.

Joint Support and Cartilage Health…

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Supporting joint and cartilage health is of the utmost importance to help prevent certain mid-life conditions such as osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis among older individuals, and is generally caused by wear and tear on the joints over the years. Our joints are made up of bones, ligaments, and cartilage; after years of bending, kneeling, and generally supporting the full weight of the body these components become weak and wore down. All of this wearing and tearing leads to the painful inflammatory condition known as arthritis, and while there are hundreds of arthritic conditions that joint supplements can help, osteoarthritis is the most common among aging individuals.

The common components in joint health supplements are glucosamine and chondroitin. These two components contain molecules similar to those found in the bodies own natural cartilage. The idea is that replacing this lost or damaged cartilage will repair the past insults to the tissue, and thus prevent any further damage to the joint. As with any type of supplement prevention is ideal, because preventing damage is much easier than correcting it. However, looking for a good joint health supplement is so much more than taking straight glucosamine and chondroitin. There are some other ingredients that your joints can benefit greatly from, and finding an all in one formula will save you a lot of pain and aggravation. Here are some key ingredients to look for:

Omega 3 and 6 Essential Fatty Acids These ingredients are a very good addition to the formula because of their ability to lubricate the joint and allow it to move with ease. These two fatty acids are also an excellent way to reduce the painful symptoms and reduce swelling in the joint.

Niacin, Folic acid, and Vitamin B12 Have shown the ability to reduce inflammation as well as relieve pain in the joint.

Vitamin E Studies have suggested that vitamin E is useful at preventing cartilage loss.

Manganese Helps build healthy bone structure and joints.

MSM Reduces the symptoms that accompany joint wear and tear.

Stinging Nettle Extract Is molecularly similar to aspirin, this herb is also an excellent way to reduce inflammation and relieve pain.

Indian Frankincense Extract Is widely used as an anti-inflammatory herb for many different conditions.

Of course all joint health supplements need to contain the key ingredients glucosamine and chondroitin. But, taking an all in one joint supplement that contains the ingredients above will give your joints the TLC they need to heal and become less painful. On top of all this the supplement needs to be bio-available; this simply means that the supplement needs to be friendly to the body and easily absorbed rather than taken and quickly excreted. Making sure that your all in one formula is bio-available ensures that the body receives the benefits of the supplement, and that you are not simply wasting your time and money. You can find this amazing all in one formula at N101.com

Everything You Need to Know About Resveratrol…

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

Resveratrol is an amazing supplement that has recently been thrown into popularity by the main stream media. However, all of this hype is well deserved. Resveratrol may very well be on of the biggest nutrient discoveries in this century. We have long known that red wine has some sort of positive effects on the body, because of the low incidence of heart disease and other health problems in cultures that consume high amounts of the sometimes bitter substance. Scientists recently made the connection between this completely natural chemical in red wine called resveratrol and the aging process. What’s even more amazing is its promising ability to correct certain health problems.

Right now resveratrol is sold mainly as an anti-aging supplement, this is because scientists have commented on the fact that resveratrol has a direct effect on the aging gene. Furthermore, they have stated that the supplement can, and has in clinical trials, delayed certain age related diseases and conditions, keeping us healthy and youthful longer. However there is a catch, resveratrol should be started before middle age, preferably as young as possible to prevent damage, and maintain a healthy body rather than trying to correct a malfunctioning body. A report published by the National Institutes of Health and backed by the National Institute on Aging, had this to say about their own clinical findings on the supplement resveratrol:

“The most effective and reproducible way found to date to alleviate age-associated disease in mammals.”

Many people have the misconception that they can drink red wine and get the desired amount of resveratrol needed to remain healthy and youthful. But, considering the fact that one supplement contains anywhere from 100-250mgs of resveratrol, and a glass of red wine only contains ½ a mg, this logic is impossible as it would literally take hundreds of glasses of wine a day to get the desired amounts.

Taking a resveratrol supplement is a great step towards leading a long, healthy, and active life. This supplement is so widely regarded that studies featuring it have been published in nearly every single magazine, medical and otherwise, in the last few years. Making sure you get a quality product is essential to getting the most out of your supplement, and one very good example of this is a product called Optimized Resveratrol. Taking this particular supplement will guarantee that every last drop of the supplement is utilized in a proper way and not simply excreted as waste.

Do Anti-aging Supplements really work??

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

Do Anti-aging Supplements really work??In the course of the last year I have heard this question so many times I can repeat the answer in my sleep. As long as you have a realistic expectation of the supplement it works fantastically. If you are going to take the supplement at 50, and expect it to make you look and feel 21 again, I am afraid you will be sorely disappointed. What it will do, if taken correctly, is prolong the inevitable aging process and keep you looking and feeling younger than your body actually is.

How does it do this??

An anti-aging supplement is designed to restore order to a chaotic aging body. You see when we are young our bodies are balanced and full of defenses, when we age we lose this perfect balance and our defenses against the known causes of aging become weak and depleted. Some scientists have suggested that this depletion is due to the stress of adulthood, while others have stated that we simply use up our reserve and our bodies can’t keep up. What ever the cause these defense mechanisms are what keep us young and prevent certain diseases and age appropriate features from appearing.

What are these defenses??

Free radicals on our skin and in our body cause us to age. Internally these free radicals are a by product of oxygen and they are every where. When we are young we have these free radicals in our body, but the difference is we have a large army of anti-oxidants, the natural destroyer of free radicals. When we age, for some reason, our body no longer has this large army, and the free radicals take over destroying our cells and wreaking havoc inside our body, even causing some very serious diseases.

How do I build my “army” back up?

We do receive some, very few, but some anti-oxidants from the food we eat. There are certain foods that are very rich in anti-oxidants such as the acai berry, blueberries, and pomegranates. But, no one can eat these all day everyday so supplementation is the best option.

So why not just take an anti-oxidant supplement?

While anti-oxidants are a great way to defend the body from the aging process, there are several other factors to take in to account as well, like skin health, and hormone balancing. Hormones play a large role in the aging process as well; aging causes a steep decline in certain hormones and this can leave us with a feeling of tiredness, sluggishness, and fatigue. Not to mention the fact that hormonal imbalances play a large role in the development of certain cancers and leads to skin issues…such as wrinkles and dryness.

Taking an anti-aging supplement will address all issues of aging, free radicals, hormonal imbalances, skin health, and much more. However, as with everything else prevention is key, so it is best to start an anti-aging supplement young before the damage has set in. In other words, if you start the supplement at 27, you will look 27 well into your 40’s rather than waiting until the aging process has already started damaging your body and skin. The key to an anti-aging supplement is healthiness, we all want to look younger but the real gift is feeling younger! To find out more about anti-aging supplements please visit N101.com.

Time to Chill… Relax-All, a Supplement to help you relax

Saturday, March 7th, 2009

Ah, the blues. Both a wonderful music genre defined by such legendary musicians as B.B. King and Eric Clapton, and a feeling of depression sometimes triggered by the postholiday season. During the elation of Thanksgiving through New Year’s, you were filled with joy, cheer and love for everyone. But the holidays are also a difficult time, full of unrealistic expectations that can lead to loneliness, feelings of inadequacy and general malaise.

You’re tired, not sleeping, a bit depressed, not eating well and you’re generally
lethargic. You may even be feeling a little guilty about all those holiday indulgences with food and alcohol. In other words, you’re singing the post-holiday blues.

In an online article entitled “Give Yourself Permission to Feel: How to Lessen Post-Holiday Blues,” noted psychotherapist Richard O’Connor wrote: “Clinics like ours see many more depressed people after the holidays. My theory is that most people put on their character armor a little tighter [during the holiday season] and do everything they can to get through a stressful time, then allow themselves to fall apart a little bit afterwards.” It’s time to get put back together and it starts with de-stressing.
STRESSING YOUR BODY
Most experts agree that stress is a major factor in disorders and diseases such as anxiety, insomnia, depression, ulcers, rheumatoid arthritis, headache, hypoglycemia, asthma, herpes, hypertension and heart disease. It’s no wonder, then, that research suggests that chronic stress speeds up the aging of your body’s cells.

In a study of 39 women, ages 20 to 50 who suffered from chronic stress, researchers studied telomeres—caps at the ends of chromosomes that naturally get shorter and shrivel as cells age and continue to divide. The scientists concluded that chronic stress appears to speed up this process So not only are you stressed, you’re also aging more rapidly than you thought. Arguing with family, friends or co-workers, not getting enough sleep, worrying, working too hard or even playing too hard can all create stress. Weekend warriors, who try to make up for a week (or in this case, season) of inactivity by spending too many hours doing strenuous physical sports, raise their stress to unhealthy levels.

Any activity that is practiced without moderation can lead to a stress response. Even a positive experience like a new job, marriage or moving into a new house can be a stress-provoking event because stress is defined as a reaction to any stimulus that upsets our normal functioning. There are many wonderful herbs that have been proven to reduce stress. But nothing compares to extracts rich in the phytochemicals honokiol and magnolol, both of which also have numerous health benefits.

One of the most impressive benefits is their ability to alleviate stress while producing a calming effect. Dozens of studies have shown that they act as a non-addictive, non-sedating anxiolytic (anti-anxiety and antistress) agent at low doses. That means small doses can help calm your nerves and alleviate anxiety, without making you sleepy. The beauty about these two phytochemicals is that honokiol exerts an anti-anxiety effect, and magnolol exerts an antidepressant effect. Honokiol has a long history of use in traditional Chinese formulas for relieving anxiety without leaving you feeling like you’ve been drugged, and has been known to induce a more relaxing effect, which in turn leads to easier sleep-time.

PRECIOUS SLEEP
According to the National Sleep Foundation, 25 percent of the United States population suffers 34 the doctors’ prescription for healthy living from lack of deep, restful sleep. That 25 percent may also be suffering from a lack of calcium since calcium is directly related to our cycles of sleep, with one study finding that calcium levels were
higher during some of the deepest levels of sleep. Calcium is one of the few minerals that acts as a natural sedative because it causes the release of the sleep-inducing amino acid tryptophan. The perfect counterpart to calcium is magnesium, and works best when it’s balanced with magnesium in a two to one ratio.

In one research study of more than 200 patients, magnesium chloride was administered as a possible means of combating insomnia. It was reported that sleep was induced rapidly, was uninterrupted, and waking tiredness disappeared in 99 percent of the patients. Another benefit was that anxiety and tension were diminished during the day. Calcium and magnesium act synergistically in hundreds of reactions in the body, and both must be respected and taken in balance. In addition to helping you sleep, they may also help muscle spasms (cramps), muscle tone, osteoporosis, faulty nerve transmission, anxiety, PMS, menstrual cramping, blood clotting, iron absorption, heartbeat irregularities, hypertension, colon conditions, and even chronic fatigue. In fact, magnesium is so important in energy production that trials utilizing its power have improved the well-being of patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

PHENIBUT FOR ANXIETY
Phenibut, more often known as Beta-phenylgamma- amino butyric acid, is a derivative of the neurotransmitter gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA). It has been clinically proven to be supportive for anti-anxiety, muscle relaxation and a mild feeling of tranquility. Studies have compared the profile of phenibut to diazepam (commonly known as Valium), which has pronounced anxiolytic properties, and piracetam, which has weak anxiolytic properties. One study found phenibut had a tranquilizing effect similar to, but weaker than, diazepam. It also caused sedation and muscle relaxation (whereas piracetam did not), but again these effects were weaker than those caused by diazepam.

In Russia, phenibut is commonly used to treat many neuroses, including post-traumatic stress disorder, stuttering, and insomnia. In double-blind placebo-controlled studies, phenibut has reportedly been found to improve intellectual function, improve physical strength, and reduce fatigue in neurotic and psychotic patients.
It all adds up to this: When it comes to the blues, you might consider something truly simple like relaxing. And you might consider doing it with Relax-All from Metabolic Response Modifiers (MRM).

TIME TO RELAX
Chronic stress, tension, anxiety and lack of a good night’s sleep can and will negatively affect your health, your happiness and your overall enjoyment of life. Some people turn to drugs or alcohol for an immediate escape. But those can only exacerbate the problem. A healthier alternative can be found in Relax-All, an herbal supplement designed to support relaxation. The formula includes calcium and magnesium (in the perfect two to one ratio), both well known for their tranquilizing effects. They assist in alleviating anxiety, nervousness, irritability, lack of or restless
sleep and physical fatigue.

The formula also includes the proprietary blend MyoCalm™ of wild jujube seed, highly regarded by the Chinese for centuries for its supportive relaxation properties and extremely low toxicity; honokiol and magnolol to support regulation and calming of the central nervous system, reducing stress and anxiety; betaphenyl- gamma-amino butyric acid, or phenibut, which successfully crosses the blood-brain barrier to elicit anti-anxiety, muscle relaxation and a mild feeling of tranquility; and L-theanine and valerian, well documented to support the formation of GABA, which influences the levels of two other neurotransmitters, dopamine and serotonin, producing a key relaxation effect.

So if you’re stressed, a little depressed and having trouble getting a good night’s rest, stop singing the blues. Kick back and take the ultimate chill pill.

Goji Berry Super Food… Super Berry

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

The Goji berry is a small red berry that grows in the subtropical regions of China, Mongolia and Tibet. This berry has been used for over 6,000 years by Chinese, Tibetan, and Indian herbalists to promote a healthy liver, healthy eyesight, improved sexual function and fertility, as well as strength in the legs. However, this is not the only benefits the Goji berry possesses; it has also been linked to boosting the immune system, improving circulation, and promoting longevity.

There have also been many claims of the Goji berry being an extremely powerful anti aging supplement. As a matter of fact, one of the companies that markets a popular Goji berry supplement claims that a man named Li Qing Yuen consumed Goji berries daily and lived to be 252 years old… This particular claim is likely untrue. However, ingesting large numbers of antioxidants does have powerful anti-aging effects on the body, and the Goji berry is loaded with these same powerful antioxidants. So logically taking a Goji berry supplement would keep you young and healthy longer.

While the Goji berry has been used for over 6,000 years in the east it has yet to gain the recognition is deserves in the west. It is because of this one small fact that researchers have failed to put the Goji berry through a series of vigorous testing and research.  The Chinese Journal of Oncology printed a study they performed in 1994; researchers found that 79 people with cancer responded better to their treatment when Goji was added to their treatment.

In other Chinese studies researchers have remarked on the powerful antioxidants present in the Goji berry. While others have stated that Goji extract may prevent the growth of cancer cells, reduce blood glucose, and lower cholesterol levels. The antioxidants in the Goji berry alone make this berry worth its weight in gold. Even with out the popularity of the western world the eastern scientists have presented more than enough evidence to show that the Goji berry is a tremendous asset to anyone’s daily supplement routine.

The Goji berry can be found in many different forms. While the most popular form is the great tasting juice from the berry itself, it can also be found in other forms such as the dried berry, Goji berry tea, and the very beneficial Goji berry extract. This extract is often found in pill form and is a great alternative for people who dislike the taste of the juice or tea.

Annemarie Borlind skin care products

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Skin health is all too often something people take for granted. When we are young and our skin is nice and taut, 99% of us never think about the future, or the negligence we have on our skin. A common misconception among the general public is that skin care is not necessary until you reach middle age, this could not be any further from the truth.

Taking care of your skin now is essential to the look and texture of your skin in the future. You see, our skin, like other systems and nutrients in our body slows the production of certain elements when we age, so when you notice the damage it is often too late to reverse it. However, if you prevent the damage, and keep the skin healthy from the start the damage will hold off until much, much later in life.

Another misconception is that the answer to aging is with the application of chemicals and harsh products. This, like the previous misconception is very wrong, chemicals and other toxic additives can sometimes have the reverse effect on your skin…hence the terms chemical burn or allergic reaction, which has the possibility to leave permanent damage.

Mother Nature gave us all we need when it comes to skin care and anti-aging. Nature has been delivering moisturizing products naturally for much longer than any company has been mixing weird ingredients and claiming to have bottled the fountain of youth. A woman who picked up on this fascinating fact early, and long before the all natural fad train left the station, was a woman named Annemarie Borlind.

Annemarie Borlind created a huge line of effective and excellent all natural skin care products. The great thing about these products is they work with your body to alleviate the skin condition you are suffering from. Ms. Annemarie has a product for just about every ailment you can think of; as a chronic sufferer of Acne she initially created several acne skin care treatments to clear the skin naturally without the use of harsh chemicals.

The Annemarie Borlind “Purifying Care Cleansing Gel” gives the skin a deep cleaning while nourishing it with herbal extracts, but not over drying it. This brilliant combination of herbs leaves the face completely clean without stripping the skin of its essential oils. Remember most other acne face washes have harsh chemical based active ingredients, which can cause irritation and over drying. This wash can be followed up by applying a “Purifying Care Cleansing Mask”; this mask will prevent any new break outs from occurring, and give the skin a fresh glow.

Although. Not everyone has acne; maybe you simply need a really good moisturizer for your hands or body. If you are in search of an all natural moisturizer look no further than an amazing Annemarie Borlind body moisturizing products. Her line of moisturizers is so very specific to you personal needs that it is as if she has created the product specifically for you. You can browse the full line of her products and choose your specific type depending on the fragrance, or severity of dryness.

What is Alpha Lipoic Acid?

Monday, February 9th, 2009

Alpha Lipoic Acid, or ALA is a fatty acid that is naturally found inside every cell within the body, the role of this fatty acid is to convert glucose to energy. However, the truly amazing thing about alpha lipoic acid is that it is also an amazing antioxidant. What sets alpha lipoic acid apart from other antioxidants like vitamin C and E, is that fact that ALA is able to function in water and fat. Researchers also believe that this particular antioxidant has the ability to collect old used up antioxidants, vitamin C and glutathione, and recycle them once it has collected them. This helps the body in tremendous ways as glutathione is responsible for ridding the body of harmful substances. But, believe it or not, this is not all that ALA does for our bodies.

There are several actions that ALA performs within the body on a day to day basis that keep us up and running. First and foremost ALA is an antioxidant, so it destroys free radicals that could harm our cells. However, there are also several conditions that an ALA supplement could help treat. For instance, peripheral neuropathy is a condition in which the there is a problem with the nerve that carries messages to and from the brain; this condition can be extremely painful, and sometimes difficult to treat effectively. But, researchers and studies suggest that ALA is beneficial in alleviating symptoms of peripheral neuropathy.

Other conditions that researchers suggest ALA may be helpful in treating is cataracts, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis, burning mouth syndrome, Alzheimer’s disease and stroke. But in order to definitively suggest ALA as a treatment, researchers must organize large study groups with conclusive results. These suggestions are being made on the bases of small study groups with positive conclusive results.

So, now that you know what ALA does… where does it come from?

Alpha Lipoic Acid is made by the body, but can be found in very small amounts in certain foods, these foods include:

  • Spinach
  • Broccoli
  • Peas
  • Brussel Sprouts
  • Rice Bran
  • Organ Meat

ALA is only found in very small amounts in these foods, so using a supplement to aid the body in making, or restoring, the ALA in your system is always a good idea. Most definitely if you have any of the conditions listed above. Researchers have noted that taking an ALA supplement on an empty stomach may aid the body in absorption. Diabetics should be sure to speak with their healthcare provider before starting an ALA regimen. This is because of the effects that ALA has on blood sugar; ALA has shown very positive results on controlling blood sugar, which can cause problems when taking medications used to lower blood sugar. Always remember to abide by the product guidelines when taking any supplement.
